Upcoming.org
Upcoming.org is an excellent site that all Cambridge Businesses and organizations could use to post Events that are happening in the Cambridge Community. The result would be one global Cambridge Community Events set from which all businesses and organizations could pull from.
Let’s say for example that all businessess and organizations were indeed signed up on Upcoming.org. If the school posted an event on Upcoming.org it would then show up on every Cambridge Site that connects to Upcoming.org.
Upcoming.org also provides venues, so your business or organization would be a venue i.e. you enter in your business/organization name, address, website, phone, etc.etc. The venue information you enter is entirely optional however it would then distinguish one event from another, while also allowing people to find the location of the event. You can also use venue as a simple way to organize events, like on CambridgeLions.org.
Another feature is that iCal and XML feeds are available. This may not mean much to you but there is an upward trend of people requesting feeds from websites which enables receiving headlines to your desktop via an aggregator. The most popular right now is Podcasting for your ipod and audio files. Also verizon is taking it to the next step by utilizing vidcasting. iCal on the other hand can be hooked up to Outlook Calendars and Sunbird. What does this mean? It means people subscribe to the Upcoming.org Cambridge iCal file. Any changes made on the Upcoming.org Cambridge Community Events Calendar is immediately reflected in your Outlook Calendar at home.
Technology and the Internet is allowing more and more information to be produced online and cost effectively distributed to the focused users that wish to receive the information. This does not cost you anything more than 5 or 10 minutes of your time to enter your businesses or organization’s event with full exposure to all that are interested.

Great post, I think that too many small business and organizations don’t realize what the internet can do for them, even without a large budget or web site to promote themselves, they can get their information out there.
