The Challenge That Inspired Lions

Already an American legend for 35 years, Helen Keller slowly strode to the center of the stage. As was her custom, Helen, 45, clung to the arm of Anne Sullivan-Macy, her almost equally famous childhood teacher. The 3,000 Lions and local Ohioans in the packed convention hall in Cedar Point were loud and restless as they awaited Helen’s speech. It was hard to blame them for their inattention. The poor acoustics in the cavernous hall had made it difficult to hear. Indeed, speaking in the same room a day later, a flustered district governor from North Carolina stormed off the stage and dragged a table to the middle of the room to be better heard..

Lions World Sight Day Events Held in Mali

Lions Clubs International and Lions in Mali marked Lions World Sight Day (LWSD) in Bamako, Mali, on Oct. 12-13. Lions leaders met with government officials to discuss the importance of eradicating preventable blindness, organized a major vision screening and toured the African Institute for Tropical Ophthalmology (IOTA)–the premier eye hospital and training institute in West Africa. The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and the Lions of Mali fund IOTA, which trains ophthalmologists and ophthalmic nurses from Mali and many other countries in West Africa..

Lions Can Experience Culture, History and Science in the Windy City By Brett Rush American poet Carl Sandburg’s “Chicago” captured the essence of a city in search of its identity in 1916. One year later, Lions would embark from this city on a journey to define themselves through compassion, diligence and a commitment to the greater good. Now, the City of Big Shoulders welcomes Lions home for the 90th Annual Lions Clubs International Convention in July. As the convention offers Lions the opportunity to share in friendship and camaraderie, the city offers a multitude of world-renowned cultural and historic destinations.

One Club’s Story

Fumbling for his wallet as the light turned green, the driver of the red Bonneville quickly changed tactics. He veered onto the shoulder, opened his window and smashed a crumpled bill into the plastic container. “Five dollars,” sang out Lion Everett Charlier after he handed the middle-aged driver his candy roll and pounced toward the next rolled-down window.

Vancouver’s New Century Lions: Always Ready to Lead and Inspire

When Laura Huang first heard about the prospect of a new Leo club being formed at her high school, the Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, she was not familiar with the Lions services in her area. But after hearing a visiting Lion speak about the Leo Club program, she was very interested and soon teamed with eight other students to help form the Templeton Leo Club.

The Family Dues Amendment

Time is a precious commodity for everyone these days, but especially for younger families where both spouses often work and share responsibilities for raising children. And there are also many parents in families with older children who are now committed to caring for an older parent or grandparent. The changing dynamics of family life, as well as new economic realities, have made it difficult for many families to volunteer their time to traditional civic organizations and service clubs. Brazilian Boy Believes in Peace Without Borders

“I was staring at the dark sky, and I imagined seeing our planet Earth from a distance. Suddenly, I could see a white dove shining with light and bringing good news to Earth … people from all over the world decided to live in peace,” said Cleverson da Silva Rosa of his grand prize winning peace poster. “Roses were scattered everywhere as a gesture expressing peace … harmony became reality. That is ‘Peace Without Borders’ taking over humankind.”
